What is Domain Rating?

Domain Rating (DR) is a score from 0 to 100 that Ahrefs gives every website, based on the strength of its backlink profile. It counts the unique domains that link to a site with followed links, and weighs each one by its own DR.

The scale is logarithmic. Going from DR 10 to 20 takes far fewer links than going from 60 to 70, which is why new sites can climb quickly at first and established sites move slowly.

DR isn't a Google ranking factor, but it tracks the thing Google does care about: links from other sites. Use it to compare your site with the pages you compete with, and to judge which sites are worth getting a link from.

How to increase your Domain Rating

DR only moves when new domains link to you. These are the steps that add referring domains for a new site, in the order most businesses take them.

  1. 01

Get listed on directories that publish

Australian business directories are the most predictable first links for a new domain. Each live listing is a new referring domain and a citation for local search.

    Directory submission
  2. 02

Get on the local guides in your region

Regional directories and local guides rank for searches in their area and link to the businesses they list.

    Regional directories
  3. 03

    Publish pages worth linking to

Original data, free tools, templates and honest comparisons earn links on their own long after you post them.

  4. 04

    Fix links you already earned

Ask sites that mention you without a link to add one, and redirect old URLs that still have links pointing at them.

  5. 05

    Keep listings live and consistent

Directories prune dead or stale listings, and out-of-date phone numbers or addresses confuse local search. Check and refresh them.

    Local citations
  6. Let agents do the listings

Dirz submits your site to directories that publish, replaces rejections, and hands you every login.

Domain Rating questions

What is Domain Rating (DR)?

Domain Rating is Ahrefs' score for the strength of a website's backlink profile, on a scale from 0 to 100. It's based on how many unique domains link to a site and how strong those linking domains are themselves.

Is this Domain Rating checker free?

Yes. Enter a domain and you get its current DR, with no sign-up. Results come from Ahrefs and are cached for a day.

What is a good Domain Rating?

It depends on your competitors. For a new site, getting from 0 into the teens is a real milestone. Most established niche sites sit between 30 and 50. Compare your DR with the sites that rank for the searches you want, not with the whole web.

Why is my new website's DR 0?

Ahrefs hasn't found enough links from other domains to your site yet, or hasn't crawled them. Getting listed on Australian business directories that publish is the quickest way to add your first referring domains.

How long does it take to increase Domain Rating?

New links usually show up in Ahrefs within days to a few weeks after the linking page is crawled. Moving from 0 to the teens can happen within a couple of months for a new site with steady listings. Higher scores take longer, since the scale is logarithmic.

Is Domain Rating the same as Domain Authority?

No. Domain Rating (DR) is from Ahrefs and Domain Authority (DA) is from Moz. Both estimate the strength of a site's links on a 0 to 100 scale, using different link indexes and formulas, so the numbers won't match.

Does Domain Rating affect Google rankings?

Google doesn't use DR; it's a third-party metric. But DR tracks links from other sites, and links are one of the signals Google uses. That's why a rising DR usually comes with better crawling and rankings.
